Born 1979 in Hartberg, Austria, Katharina Gross studied at the Musikhochschule Lübeck with David Geringas, at the Musikhochschule Cologne with Frans Helmerson and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Ralph Kirshbaum. She took part in master classes with Mstislaw Rostropovich, Martin Lovett, Harvey Shapiro, Karine Georgian and Philippe Muller. She won the first prices at Jugend Musiziert and the Liezen International Cello Competition in Austria, second prices at the Gorizia International Cello Competition in Italy and the International Brahms Competition Pörtschach, Austria. On tour in Spain she was the soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Kiev under the baton of Robert Gutter. Other appearances as soloist included the Philharmonic Orchestra of Klausenburg with conductor Luciano Accocella, the Staatsorchester Kassel under Roberto Paternostro and the Symphonic Orchestra of Thüringen conducted by Oliver Weder, performing the cello concerti by H.Pfitzner and J.Myslivecek among others. In November 2006 she performed the cello concerti by Haydn and Sallinen´s Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote with the Salzburg Chamber Soloists on a tour to the USA.
Recital appearances brought her to Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and the USA: she performed in recital at Wiener Konzerthaus, at the Salzburger Kulturtage, the Festival Santander, at the Bodensee Festival, the Musica nei Castelli/Trentino (Italy) and in Thessaloniki/Vafopoulio a.o. In 2004 her first CD was released by AULOS/Musikado with works by Schubert, de Falla, Ligeti and Shostakovich. Next to being a young soloist of high acclaim, Kathatina Gross is an active chamber musician. She has been invited by the Párkányi Quartet/ Ex Orlando Quartet to play the String Quintet by F.Schubert in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria, by the Danish Esbjerg Ensemble and is also member of the group unOriginals that is focusing on the combination of music, literature and performance. In 2007 she will become the artistic director of the Kornberger Festtage, Austria.
